French Art Deco Silvered Bronze
Sculpture of a Ballet Russes Dancer
Circa 1920's, France
French Art Deco Figural bronze, with
cold painted and silverplated finish.
Displayed on the original elaborate marble and onyx base,
with copper triple banding and framed by a pair of large black onyx
spheres.
This dancer embodies the exoticism of the Ballets Russes of Paris.
This Persian Dancer wears the attire most associated with the East;
harem pants with a bronze bustier top, exotic jewelry, jeweled
armbands and curled-toe slippers.
She is holding a scarf that drapes behind her.
This costume is similar to those
worn by dancers Vaslav Nijinsky and Ida Rubenstein,
who created a sensation in their Paris debut of the Ballets Russes
performance of Scheherazade in 1910. Rubenstein appeared at the
opening of the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in her
Bakst-designed costume from Scheherazade, illustrating the
continuing appeal of this opulent style.
Dimensions: 21 1/4" high, 14 1/4"
wide, 4 1/2" deep.
Please note, because of the bronze and thick marble, this is a heavy
sculpture.
Condition: In excellent original
condition; showing age appropriate wear and patina. The
silver-plated area of the dancer's (skin) has been recently hand
polished. The copper bands on the base have the patina intact.
