French Art Deco Male
Equestrian Statue
Sculptor / artist: Charles and DeMarco
Circa 1920’s, France
High quality figural sculpture of a well defined horse with
an athletically built man.
The horse has a stylized mane and tail, and is rearing on his hind
legs.
The man is wearing only a loincloth.
He is blowing a trumpet, leading the charge.
He is standing beside the horse, holding the horse's (original)
leather reins.
Beautiful verde bronzed patined finish over a cast metal (Spelter)
figure.
Signed on the side between the back legs of the horse, 'Charles'.
Heavy, angular sculptural stone base, signed on backside, by stone
sculptor, DeMarco.
DeMarco was known for creating stone sculptures and for making
commissioned bases for other artists
to display their statues on.
Little is known about the artist
'Charles' ,
although it is believed that many of his pieces (such as this) may have been made at the LeVerrier foundry.
Most of his pieces have an equestrian theme.
LeVerrier sometimes also used the carved stone sculpted bases by
the artist, DeMarco for his pieces.
See our item # DAS51 for an example.
We have other figures by Charles, with Females in Equestrian themes.
This dramatic sculpture looks great
from all sides.
